From the Paper "Those who contract diabetes in childhood are more likely to contract coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular diseases in their adult lives (Baker, 2007). This disease's newfound prevalence has resulted in a name, cardiometabolic syndrome, which is gaining currency in new reports. A more recent study which followed up the results of the Sinha study found that early identification of cardiometabolic risks in children could result in earlier and more aggressive interventions to prevent progression to full-blown diabetes (Velasquez-Mieyer, 2007). Eisenmann et al found a relationship between "fatness and fitness" and insulin sensitivity amongst 7- to 9-year old children (Eisenmann, 2007). The study differentiated between obese and fit subjects, and found that those who were unfit (i.e. did not exercise often or enough) and obese had the worst fasting insulin results, while those who were in the 'normal' group had the best results. In the fat-fit groups, the values were intermediate. The authors concluded that exercise, with and without obesity, reduce chances of developing insulin resistance. A recent study published in JAMA demonstrated the effects of a weight management and exercise program on overweight children (Savoye, 2007). This randomized controlled trial followed 209 overweight children, aged 8 to 16 years of age. 135 participants completed a 6 month study, while 119 (53%) completed a 12-month study. Although the researchers established three arms (control, exercise and diet), they had to discontinue enrollment in the diet arm due to 'a high dropout rate.' The study measured reductions in BMI and concomitant insulin resistance, but the weight loss failure is indicative of the difficulty in changing eating behaviors amongst pre-teens and teens."

Abstract This paper discusses the importance of nursing theory as not simply a philosophical abstraction, but as also useful for the demands for "description, explanation, prediction and control" during nursing work and study. Having a background in nursing theories can prove helpful because theories give clues as to what to ask, what to observe, what to focus on and what to think about when a nurse is under pressure or dealing with a noncompliant patient. The paper asserts that even grand theories have a practical emphasis. They can offer validation of the patient's cultural differences and self-empowerment and actualization through facilitating patient self-care. Self-care facilitation is a stress in many of the grand theories, as Orem's theory likewise attempts to address self-care deficits such as patient noncompliance with a dietary or physical fitness regime. There is always inevitable overlap between models, as contemporary nursing models and grand theories all strive to be limited to a focus on problems in nurse-patient situations or problems in person-environment interaction to be of use in practitioners in the field. Furthermore, the paper looks at the use of middle range theories in nursing, which some assert are more useful and more easily tested in practice. These mid-range theories act as subsidiaries of grand theories, and draw a great deal of their philosophy from grand theories. The major categories of knowledge reflected in different contemporary nursing models and grand theories, which include needs-based approaches, interaction-based approaches, outcome-focused approaches and humanistic approaches can be placed through the use of mid-range theories in a very specific context, such as pain management, or health promotion.

A test-tube experiment (Health News 2006) and surveys conducted with male respondents in Shanghai, China and in Italy offered evidence on its potency. Only a tenth of an ounce of garlic could lower the risk at 53%, according to a medical expert (Recer). The World Garlic Symposium declared that garlic brought down cholesterol levels alone or in combination with anti-cholesterol drugs. A recommended dose was set for the daily consumption of allicin."

The eating and exercise habits that are inculcated during childhood can have long lasting repercussions throughout adulthood. For these repercussions to be good, the habits themselves must be good. Adults must take the time to be good examples in their children's lives, and to consider what it is that children should learn. Cultural values such as freedom of choice and consumerist hyper-individualism may serve their purposes in some facets of contemporary society, but they will not necessarily prevent children from becoming obese. Parents and guardians must learn to consider the food choices and food lessons that affect their children. They must help their children understand these lessons and so live better and happier lives, free of the problems of childhood obesity."

From the Paper "As we see, the industrial revolution brought profound changes to much of the world. Social and cultural life changed completely. While some aspects of sport and leisure remained unchanged, in that people continued to do some of the things they loved, other aspects of sport and leisure were profoundly changed. For one thing, people simply had more leisure. In addition, the growth of mass culture brought change to sport. For example, the phenomenon of mass venues for hundreds of spectators, not seen since the Greek and Roman times, was revived. In addition, there was a growing awareness that the industrial revolution had caused lifestyles to become less active, and this led to a growing awareness of the need for recreational sport. However, it would be a long time before physical education was widely offered to the masses. In particular, the working class, girls and women would wait a long time before they would be able to benefit from such education."

From the Paper "Indeed, a study of homeless women residing in downtown Los Angeles found that almost half of the women surveyed (there were 50 in total and they ranged in age from 18 to 44) slept 6 or fewer hours per night and had an uneven "day/night" sleep pattern. As well, employing the bio-behavioral framework to the full, lifestyle choices - habitual drinking, smoking, and drug use - were significant predictors of poor sleep patterns and mental health illnesses such as depression, chronic anxiety (especially anxiety sparked by worries about money and safety), and persistent loneliness, were also contributing factors to the "sleep/wake" patterns of the subject population."
